Changes in the Recruiting Process:
Over the years, the recruiting process has evolved significantly. I think overall, higher caliber players and athletes are being attracted to the sport. As the game has grown at the youth and high school level, the level of experience and coaching has increased the caliber of players looking to play at the collegiate level. There are also more formal pathways for one to showcase oneself online and in person. Additionally, the number of programs actively recruiting has increased, providing players with more opportunities to pursue collegiate-level rugby.
What Coaches Like to See in Game Film:
Highlight films are the preferred medium for showcasing talent, as most coaches do not have the time to watch full games. A well-crafted highlight reel should display various skills, including general abilities, unit-based skills, and position-specific techniques. Coaches appreciate players who can demonstrate versatility, technical proficiency, and the ability to make an impact in multiple facets of the game. A strong highlight film offers a concise yet comprehensive look at what the athlete brings to the table.

What Coaches Look for at Tournaments or Camps:
When observing players at tournaments or camps, character stands out above all else. Coaches value good teammates—those who show a positive attitude, consistent effort, selflessness, and leadership attributes. The way players interact with teammates, coaches, and even parents can leave a lasting impression. Beyond athletic skills, coaches look for players who contribute positively to team dynamics, maintain composure, and display respect, leadership, and sportsmanship in every interaction.
First Impressions When Meeting a Player:
First impressions matter greatly when meeting a player for the first time. Coaches notice how players carry themselves, their body language, and their level of preparedness. Players can stand out by demonstrating genuine interest in the program—this includes researching it beforehand, asking thoughtful questions, and taking notes during the meeting. Details like dressing appropriately (not necessarily formally), being in a quiet area, and maintaining eye contact convey professionalism and seriousness. The priorities players emphasize when speaking also reveal what drives them and how they align with the program’s values.
What High School Players Should Focus on More: High school players often overlook the importance of long-term planning and understanding how their choices impact their future. It’s essential to consider the direction they want their life to take and how rugby and their choice of collegiate institution can align with those goals. Additionally, players should research the variety of rugby programs available and identify what fits their aspirations, both on and off the field. This thoughtful approach can help them make decisions that set the stage for a fulfilling collegiate experience
and life beyond.
Thoughts on the Future of High School Rugby: High school rugby has tremendous potential, and its growth depends on fostering not only skilled athletes but also strong character. Coaches prioritize good teammates and leaders who are coachable and can positively contribute to a team culture. In the future, the hope is to see more players who embody these values, helping the sport continue to grow while maintaining its foundational principles of respect, teamwork, and leadership.
